***********************  Legislative Alert!!! Cuomo Announcement *********************** Taking this at face value, I am not alarmed with his proposal. However, this may not be the bill as it will be introduced in the Legislature. We'll have to make sure we see what is introduced and what it will mean to New York's gun owners. Today I'm announcing that the first proposal in my 2020 State of the State Agenda will be to make our gun laws even stronger by preventing individuals who commit a serious crime in another state from owning a gun in New York. Yesterday was the anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting — a tragedy that took 26 innocent lives, including 20 first graders, shocking our country to its very core. In the seven years since Sandy Hook, the federal government has made no progress in passing common sense gun laws, shamefully neglecting their duty to keep our children safe. In New York, we have taken the exact opposite approach. In the weeks following the horrific shooting, I signed the NY SAFE Act into law, mandating universal background checks, a ban on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons, and more. Since then, we have taken further action to strengthen our gun laws: We passed legislation to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and enacted a Red Flag Law. Today's proposal is the next step our state can and must take to help end the crisis of gun violence. New York law currently prohibits individuals from obtaining a gun license if they commit certain New York misdemeanors that are deemed "serious offenses." However, the law does not prohibit individuals from obtaining a New York gun license after committing comparable misdemeanors in another state. These serious offenses include certain domestic violence misdemeanors, misdemeanor sex offenses like forcible touching, and unlicensed possession of a firearm. I am proposing we act to prevent those individuals from obtaining a gun license in New York. Gun violence in this country is a crisis. The cause is clear: spineless politicians in Washington who refuse to stand up to the NRA and pass common sense reforms.  The solution is also clear: New York's strongest-in-the-nation gun laws which have made us the safest big state in the country. But until the federal government acts, states with weak gun laws will continue to endanger New Yorkers at home, and I will not tolerate it. This new law, if passed, will keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people and save lives. I'm proud that New York continues to show the country that we don't have to live like this — that we can and will end gun violence. Ever Upward, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo
